BV WINS COOPERSTOWN FOR A RECORD 5TH TIME

                   Image

In front of the 2nd largest crowd to ever watch a Cooperstown Dreams Park Championship game, the Beaver Valley 12u RED won the program's 5th Cooperstown Championship in dramatic fashion.  The game lived up to the hype, as two of the top 10 teams in the country competed for one of the nation's biggest championships.  The crowd of almost 6,000 people were treated to great baseball played by great kids.  BV pulled out the victory by a score of 2-1.  Going into the game, not many people gave BV a chance to knock off the #1 seed, Jacksonville Storm.  During the week, the Storm scored an average of almost 20 runs per game!!  Their ace pitcher, David Boyle, was talked about as unhittable.  His fastball topped out in the low 80's and his slider was straight nasty.  They had Boyle fresh and ready to pitch all six innins against our guys.  The BV hitters stepped in the box and took all that Boyle had to offer.  Brendan McKay gave the whole BV team confidence by stepping in the box in the top of the 1st inning and hitting an 83mph fastball into the centerfield seats.  McKay then took the mound for BV and dominated the Storm by keeping them off balance.  McKay pitched 3 innings striking out 6 and only allowing 1 hit.  Coach Smith was quoted as saying, "I have always said that Brendan has ice in his veins.  He is out there hitting and pitching against one of the top teams in the country and he looks like he is playing ball in his back yard and nobody is there but him!!"  In the top of the 4th inning, BV manufactured another run as starting shortstop David Lyons pounded a single to left field.  He reached 3B on Carrington Bell's hard hit groundball that bounced off of the Storm's second baseman.  The official scorer ruled Bell's hit an error (this was the only error of the game for either team).  With 1 out, DJ Gati came to the plate and hit a groundball to 2B, this looked like an inning ending double play, but DJ sprinted down the line and beat out the throw to first.  His hustle allowed Lyons to score on the hit and give BV a 2-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, BV gave the ball to Carrington Bell to pitch the remainder of the game.  Bell did his job, allowing one run on a homerun hit by David Boyle.  In the final 3 innings Bell struck out 6 while only allowing 1 hit.  During the final inning, the "BV" chant could be heard from the capacity crowd.  When the game ended, the coaches and players rushed the field to celebrate together.  It will be a celebration that will never be forgotten.  Coach Smith was quoted after the game as saying, "I am so proud of these kids.  To win a game that nobody gave us a chance to win shows the guts of these players.  This whole week was a total team effort, everybody in a BV uniform did something to help this team be successful!"  This Championship gives Beaver Valley Baseball and Coach Smith their 5th Championship!!  This accomplishment is a Cooperstown Dreams Park record for the most 12U Championships!!
